Ischia, Capri And Naples

Capri

We had a few days on Ischia and then as soon as the weather was settled we decided to head to Capri for a look.

All the islands are so close together. Literally from Naples there are 5 large islands within a 40 minute ferry ride. Capri is one of these. Plus it is a giant rock driving up out of the sea.

Looking down to Marina Grande

We are one of those boats anchored in the bay. It was very roley so Roger had to stay on board and the three of us took a taxi boat to shore and then climbed up to the top of the island. The equivalent of 28 floors.

Beautiful- and so busy! Ridiculously busy with day trippers. In fact stay on Capri don’t day trip Capri. It’s not such a nice experience. I did enjoy the very narrow vehicles they have devised to get their ‘stuff’ around.

Bags of concrete, window frames, garbage etc. all their service vehicles are like this.

By the time we got back on board the settled weather was over and a storm brewing. Dark clouds over Sorrento and Vesuvius. We are heading into a marina south of Naples- Castelmmare da Stabia.

We are expecting bad weather so are choosing to spend a day on land , we’ve booked tickets to see Pompei and we can take the train a few stops from the marina. Very easy.

So wet in fact that we had to buy rain ponchos 😂

It made the Pompei visit very nice actually. No dust, it was cold and not too wet. Pompei was amazing to see. Huge. And a couple of days later we visited the Archaeological Museum in Naples where they house the found objects from Pompei. Extraordinary items of great beauty and skill.

The storm has hung around longer than anticipated so now we have headed into Naples. We are staying on Procida and took the hydrofoil into town.

Food, food , food

We had fun, seeing art and history. Naples felt very vibey- exciting – it felt positive and creative. Really nice to see as often you hear about the dark side. Not apparent this time.

Palazzo Donn’Anna
The view from the top of the mountain above the marina. We took the cable car up 1200m and then a short walk to the Belvedere and we are looking to Sorrento and Capri in the background

So cool and chilly up on the mountain. A different view – paths and trails, Rifugio’s to shelter in. Such amazing landscape – the urge to explore continues 😊

It looks wonderful, Jane. I had heard that Naples used to be avoided but has improved so looks like that may be true. You haven’t missed anything here-constant howling westerlies and rain and the coolest temperatures for decades. Enjoy your travels
