Asinara

Sunset at Spiaggia Lo Pelosa

We have arrived at the north western tip of Sardegna and passed through the channel into the most pristine turquoise water of La Pelosa. The channel separates the main island from Asinara which is a Park Reserve and the island where the Albino donkey lives.

Albino donkeys somehow continue to thrive in this dramatic landscape.

Not only Albino but also brown, grey and one black donkey live on the island. Pigs, goats and some horses too the donkeys keep separate areas and never cross territories. And there are 3 spring water lakes that provide water as 10mm a year rainfall means for an arid, granite landscape. Very beautiful.

A marine reserve as well as park reserve. No swimming, no walking on the beaches,no fishing

The island has a varied history with most recently a high security prison. All are empty now and falling apart. The choice is to let them disappear. While there are some who say they should be renovated, restored, resorts, accommodation- the choice to keep the divine nature of this place seems a good one.

Sunset looking out over the west coast – 🙏
Spring fed lake – the horses and donkeys go in for a swim on hot days. The Albino donkeys then roll in the dirt and get their version of sunscreen. It’s incredible that they have survived so long in this landscape. Tough – very little – critters!
Swim time even for the horses
A brown donkey – black ears, a black stripe across the shoulders and down the spine.
Perfetto- on anchor, amazing water, still night and dinner!
The village of Stintino and the Porticciolo – fisherman’s harbour.
