Siracusa, Ortigia and Marzamemi

We left Taormina after our delicious granita and headed for Ortigia – a tiny island that sits right next to Siracusa and is connected by a bridge.

The Norman castle at the point – the whole island is walled with arches through at a few places to access the water

Ortigia is extraordinarily abundant with enormous cathedrals, government buildings and a history that dates back to the Greeks, Byzantines and beyond.

The quay
The streets at night are full of bars and cafes

Then onto Marzamemi- an Arab settlement and ‘Tonnara’ dating back to 1000AD – it’s buildings have now been re purposed as restaurants and tuna shops showcasing local produce. It’s popular!

Tomorrow is looking like a windy day! We will sail to Malta
