Mazaro del Vallo

We are continuing our way along the southern coast of Sicily and we are witnessing changes to the landscape both natural and built.

The Arabic influence is increasing and here st Mazara we are 80nm off Tunis. The old town here is called The Casbah and the Arabic influences are apparent.

Again it is a beautiful historic town where art now places a big role. Along the winding streets drawings, paintings, tilings decorate old doors, walls and windows.

The streets are made of marble, all paved decoratively. Slippery! Churches, mosques, piazzas- quiet everywhere 1.30-5pm then everyone is out and about until late.

People on holiday here are mostly Italian. We are a little off the beaten track. Not much English is spoken but Rog is doing well with his Italian accent and confidence.

Next stop is Favignana- we can see the Egadi Islands in the distance. The weather is great. And nice winds for sailing. They are in our favour coming from the South about 10-15 knots. Good spinnaker weather!

It was difficult to make out the island placement as we approached. The map was showing us clearly but our eyes were seeing something quite different.

Favignana has a 300m hill in the centre and long flat ends Luke wings stretched out from a body or a dragon sleeping. There are many bays and swimming spots depending on where the wind is coming from.

We went to Cala Rossa first for a swim. Hundred of rubber duckies in the bay with thousands of Italians having Sunday in the sun and at the beach.

Then into Port for a berth on the quay. At first glance it doesn’t look like much but then you walk up and into the square and there is a whole new world.

Such a pretty place. Everyone is in holiday mode. It’s Rottnest – Italian style.

Tuna fishing has been a big part of life here and while the fishing practices have changed the legacy of the industry remains with huge buildings now turned into museums and galleries. Tuna is still sold in every form and fresh tuna is on the menu.

Amazing buildings –

It is apparently the Florio family from Favignana who invented/perfected the tuna canning process! Once they finished with that they went on to create Marsala wine … Cheers!
