Salina

We left Stromboli and made our way across to Salina. It lies behind , north of Lipari.
All these islands ( volcanoes) are close together with 10 miles or so being around 1.5 hours sail/travel time.
The weather continues to be beautiful – unlike Melbourne here the weather app says 27 degrees- feels like 33!
Being on the water is a bonus, generally there is some cool breeze.

Salina is quieter and chic. Galleries, bookstores, local food plus the originals making their sun dried tomatoes and capers.
A promenade where you can sun and swim and safe harbour in bad weather.

Bad weather did come in the form of rain and a strong westerly.
We were anchored at the back of Lipari having a swim when all of a sudden 25 knots plus arrived so everyone hotfooted back into harbour.

We stayed 2 nights as we waited for the weather to clear. On the Sunday we rented a Fiat Panda and drove around the island. It doesn't take long. Left at 10.30 back at 2 and that includes lunch.

As we drove around and looked at the view we decided to head that afternoon back to Salina and then onto Panarea the next day. Whilst the storm is done the seas are still big. Luckily it is only 4nm – about 40 minutes and all quiet on Salina.
The crowds have diminished by 80% and the ferry traffic is reduced accordingly. There are quite a few charter groups out mostly with skippers on board. Some super yachts still hanging too and by the end of this month these islands will be closing up for winter.
Lipari, Salina and Stromboli are big enough for communities to live year round but Panarea looks like it probably empties.

Bye for now

Looks lovely Jane. We are off up the hill to Monreale today. Happy sailing and thanks for the Stromboli info. We are staying three nights on Vulcano. Maybe some nasty weather on its way over the weekend and Melbourne in for a very cold snap. Xx
