Yesterday we motored around the south end of Ithaki and headed for the poet pf Sami on Cephalonia.
The 2 islands lie side by side with quite a narrow channel running the length of the islands.
Looking through the valleys you can see the mountains of other neighboring islands so the feeling of being in a large bowl is there. Surrounded.
Both islands were devastated by an earthquake in 1953. Many of their old buildings were destroyed and many people left. As the recession affects those that are left they are turning back to farming and fishing. Big olive cultivation and trees that had been left as the tourist market was looked after are now being attended to.
