We sailed up the coast from Portovenere. Past the Cinque Terre. We have been here 30 years ago – our first OS trip and without the children. It was a quick romp from Vienna – for a conference, to Verona, to the Cinque Terre and then to Rome. I still remember Roger grumbling as we headed from Portovenere up to a goat track and walked the Cinque Terre in drizzle. The noise Rog made – what is funny now is that walk was about 15km – nothing really and we took the train back – all of 10 minutes through the tunnels mostly – only in daylight when a station at a village appeared.
Today a storm is coming so it is very grey, cold and threatening rain. It has poured last night and the sail is full of water – we will have to stand clear as it goes up as it can be a waterfall as the water releases from the sail and lazy bag.
We will head to Genova a couple of days early and have plenty of time to see the city. From here Roger is taking the train to Venice for the Vernissage of the Biennale and I am flying to the UK to stay with my 96 year old Aunt in Hartburn.

I flew from Genova via Amsterdam to Teeside Airport with KLM. Very good, easy and quick and the airport is about 15 minutes from Hartburn. Everything went well. I rented a Fiat 500 – a friend of Aunty Chris’ lent us a wheelchair and we set off. She has not been out of the house since I was here last year. First stop Marks and Spencer. She has reduced in size by 50% and her pants are falling off her so new clothes are a big priority – luckily M&S have everything she needs and she loves a shop – a very happy outcome – but exhausted.
We have a “to-do” list that included ears and eyes being checked, medications followed up, new door installation to be completed, passwords to be changed or renewed, lots of little everyday things.
And on Sunday we chose to you to Saltburn – about 30 minutes to the coast – just beautiful. A huge headland, the Cleveland way where you can walk along the wild coast through little villages. Spectacular and Saltburn itself – really nice with big old hotels and Terrace houses facing the sea.

We are both back in Genova and now going to head along the northern coast towards Monaco. The sun has come out – the wind looks light to middling and all is ok…….
PS apologies if you received this twice – I was working away and we got too far for phone reception. my original got lost and I have redone it but it seems a few might have got transmission.
