Finally we can sail – today there is wind and it’s blowing our way! This can be a rare event.
So off we set from Marzamemi due South to Malta. We are planning to sail into Valletta late this afternoon. Magical conditions and we have a lovely day sailing quietly but quite quickly along.

It is always exciting arriving in a new place. From the first glimpse of land to finally getting into the harbour you find the details of the landscape come into view.
The harbour at Valletta is incredible. With 8 arms like the 8 pointed star there are forts on every point. Huge cathedrals, sheer limestone cliffs – the city sits high above the water.

For such a small place the scale of everything is huge. Lots of familiar names on buildings and businesses that highlight the Maltese Australian connection.

We did find the heat got to us – 40C and with all the light stone it can become oppressive. So we found ourselves a cinema and spent 3 hours in air conditioned comfort watching Elvis. Great movie and it was restorative to feel cold.

So much history here and so many layers of time, culture, language and religion. Very interesting and a bit overwhelming as there is so much.
We also happened to be there for a Festival celebrating their history. Sound and light shows projected onto the forts walls culminating in a firework display. We were able to walk down from the Marina to the rocks below the fort and join with locals picnicking and barbecuing in the warm night.

Hello to you both & thank goodness I’ve worked out how to respond!!
Your updates have been a joy to read especially as the weather here has been soo cold!!!
