Tropea and onto Sicily – Taormina

Tropea sits high on the cliff- 200 steps up into the town. White, sandy beaches and acqua water
Stairs up!
It’s a popular beach town

Tropea is an ancient town with more than 50 Palazzos. A lot of them are restored and converted to hotel accommodation. Endless views over the sea, sunsets and Stromboli puffing away in the background.

Tropea is a great place to stay and also have easy access to Sicily and the Aeolian Islands. There is a train from Naples that will take you along the coast and then into the ship to cross to Messina on Sicily.

The weather is continuing mild with no wind and transiting the Messina Strait is effortless plus a 3 knot advantage with a descending current

We have transited the Strait 4 times now and each time has been heavy going. Battling strong winds, waves, ferries plus current – it can be arduous. Today we had blue skies, no wind, current assist and miraculously few ferries!

We are moored at the Yacht Hotel and this is our morning view of Etna. In the foreground the village of Giardini Naxos below Taormina

George Rizzo runs a Yacht Hotel under the cliff at Taormina. He moors you to a buoy, provides transport inshore, taxis on land, laundry, breakfast – really anything you require. He has been here since 2008 and only lives on his boat although has recently purchased a mobile home for winter!

Into the volcanic landscape of Etna. This crater from 180 years ago just starting to grow vegetation
It seems as if a gardener has deliberately planted small plants evenly over the surface. Very beautiful.
Much older areas where the vegetation is well established. 300 years since eruption.

A spectacular landscape on Etna with hiking, trekking, mountain biking, marathons, skiing.

And lastly as we depart, a espresso mandorle granite with double cream and brioche from Bam Bar – the most famous of granite bars. Nowhere does granite like this!
