Ponza

We were ready to leave the Blue Dolphin Marina on Saturday 20 May.

Everything had been ticked off the list, we had provisioned and now it was time to head out of the Tiber.

We were both a little nervous.Three years since we had been onboard and it all felt unfamiliar. It was going to be a bit ‘clunky’ to start.

We followed other boats out to the entrance. The sand shifts and silts at the entrance and makes for cautious moves- it’s very shallow

It’s also surprising how ‘low key’ the entrance to the Tiber is. It is still a working port with dockyards either side and the ancient fishing huts with their big pontoons and nets suspended over the water.

Dockyards line the banks of the Tiber as far as any boat can go

And after a few snags in ropes and some incorrect rigging righted we set sail for Ponza. It is an island 60 nm ( nautical miles) south of Ostia and we anticipate an 8 hour sail. We have never been here before and we do know it is popular and it is important to arrive in daylight as it is part of a volcanic bowl and very rocky.

By 8pm we were here and docked and walking into town. A beautiful colourful village that’s ‘the place to be’ for the Roman summer. It’s busy but not crazy and it’s nice to be part of it all.

Ponza town
The hillside close to town is packed with colourful villas
And high up in the cliffs you can see windows, doors and balconies of houses/ caves that are built into the cliff face. The rock here is amazing!
