We said goodbye to Peter and Andrea at Terrasini and they made their way to Palermo.
Christopher, my cousin from the UK has joined us which is fun. An ‘old salt’ he is a marine engineer and a sailor and has a great sense of humour. It’s a pleasure to have him on board.
We decided to set out for Ustica not really knowing what it would be like. It’s a Marine Reserve, a volcanic and fertile island. It’s remote – 38nm off the north coast of Sicily. It’s tiny – 9 km around and the harbour – cramped to say the least. When considering going to these places, particularly when they are unknown – we have to think about anchoring, is it possible, is it safe ? The weather forecast was for very mild weather and the winds were going to take us there and back over 3 days. It’s about a 5 hour sail in good conditions – so we go!

Matchy matchy – I got dressed first! Breakfast coffee and biscotti!

Ustica port Santa Maria
In a word – delightful. So simple. Old people, old cars, a vibrant town square on a slant (hill). Amazingly clear water, beaches, a panini bar in the middle of nowhere just when you are thinking ‘perhaps we should have packed a lunch’. Not only panini but granita, wine, beer,ice-cream and shade. Fabulous. A few people, not too many. Great snorkelling- loads of fish.

We hired electric bikes again and headed off around the island. A couple of disasters as Roger got two flat tyres!
