Italy

Monday 21 August

We set off tom Kalami north of Corfu Town and headed north with no wind.

Finally around 10.30 am we were out in the western edge of Corfu and the wind began.
We were expecting 15 knots – and it was in the beginning but it ramped up significantly.

Until we found ourselves in 30 knots plus and a huge sea that became a bit of an endurance ride.
Rog and I are well used to big winds having grown up sailing in Perth -25 knots bring your average day. Georgia was getting worried and we all agreed it was a good thing that Toberta was not there as she hates 'tipping'. And did we tip.
Luckily we went fast too – 10 knots – and it still took 11 hours. No food – as we couldn't move about safely. Georgi and I tucked ourselves in, hung on and Rog was a star skipper – 'Capitano Raj'
Finally the Italian coastline and Santa Maria Di Leuca

A fabulous cafe, great pizza, buffala mozzarella and wine and we all felt better

Tuesday 22 August

Although we felt tired and the wind was still going to be 15 knots (?) we decided to contour on to Crotone. Se we have gone from the tip of the heel to the ball of the foot.
The swell – humungus – the wind 25 knots gusting 30 plus. We were the only boat out.
11 knots – much faster and still a 9 hour day.
Some moments of respite – Rog could have a rest and use the auto helm some of the time.
We literally fell into Crotone and met some Germans in the boat next door. They had done the crossing the day before and also felt it was heavy going.

There are 4 of these huge gas platforms off Crotone- 30 metres high or so.

Wednesday 23 August

We have set sail for Rocella Ionica – a quiet day is what we expect. 10 knots and a following sea so perhaps a little more relaxing.

Some photos of Crotone for you

Bye for now
