The Corinth Canal

The wind did not drop as much as we hoped and at first light it was still blowing hard.
We met an Englishman from another boat who was also going to transit today so we set off together.
The approach on the East side of the canal at Isthmia is hidden until you are almost upon it.
Yachts tie up at the entrance and complete paperwork and pay. It’s quite expensive 214 Euros for our 43ft yacht.
Within 10 minutes of arriving about 6 other boats tied up.
Now we wait. The canal is one way – nearly 6 kms long and 25 meters wide. There are hydraulic bridges at each end that submerge to let boats through.
Within 40 minutes we were on our way.
It was as if a starting gun had gone and everyone was pushing to get off the quay and to the front of the queue. Single file after that whether you like it or not.
The weather is awful – storm clouds overhead, strong winds and cold. We are rugged up but need beanies!
Now we are out into the Gulf of Corinth surrounded by mountains and we are heading for Andikirion to stay the night
